Replacement of two ageing vehicles has become a priority in order to keep Orewa’s Community Patrol on the road.
The patrol began its voluntary service as the eyes and ears of police in 2006, with two diesel vehicles supplied by Transfield in Silverdale.
Patrol coordinator Margaret Stevens says that the company’s generous sponsorship, which has also paid for all running costs, including fuel and maintenance of the vehicles, is unlikely to continue, and so recently volunteers began fundraising in earnest.
One of the vehicles has more than 200,000km on the clock, and the other more than 300,000km and Patrollers hope to replace them with a single, reasonably late model vehicle.
Patrollers cover Dairy Flat, Silverdale, Red Beach and Waiwera as well as Orewa, working in pairs each Friday and Saturday night.
Acting Orewa Community Constable Steve Hunt says the group has been highly successful in helping keep the area safe, assisting with information that has led to arrests on a number of occasions.
They are also trained in first aid to help at the scene of accidents as well as in the use of fire equipment.
